Hoodman Loop

I use follow focus for manual focusing with Canon 5D Mark 2 video mode. Quite a many times I noticed that focus was off the target. LCD screen is good but not big enough for me to be sure when I am focusing correct. On the other hand dof is thin and my eyes are old. Something was to be done either bigger screen or better eyes. Better eyes I couldn't get and bigger screen was too expensive and will need also more batteries to the field to carry with. I saw somebody was using Hoodman Loop 3" and I decided to buy one. I bought also one LCD Hood & Cap for 40D.
I did cut upper section off from LCD Hood & Cap and glued that to hold Hoodman Loop 3" in a correct position. Now I can press Hooman Loop against my eye corner to hold camera steady when shooting video. At the same time hood is covering screen and bright sun light is not disturbing visibility.

Canon 5D Mark II and Follow Focus

I bought Canon 5D Mark II just before Christmas when it come available. It did have a new feature for a shooting HD video.
The next step was finding a fluent manual focusing system for 5D Mark II. I did find an Indian manufacturer DV City for video equipments.

They had all I needed with fairly good price. I did order Matte Box, Follow Focus system and extra gear set. Everything arrive by UPS in about a week.

This is how it looked.
This complete system is too big for my traveling stuff. I did modify follow focus smaller and lighter.

Matte Box

Matte box is protecting direct light hitting front lens and filters. Direct light will cause unwanted reflections and flare in optics. This do have big flags...

There was also a set of "donuts", sealing around optics and an opening in matte box. It has place for two filters one is rotating. Filter size is 100 x 100 mm (4" x 4"). I use a set of Sinar ND filters to cut light down when I want to use wide open.

Video head and tripod

I needed a new video head light one for traveling. Gitzo's G2180 looked fine to me. Under the head I placed Arcatech level base. Gitzo's G2180 has own standard clamp and I needed to clamp video size width 55 mm and my Arca swiss style stuff with same clamp. Gitzo has a quick release adapter G1387B. Gitzo's light tripod GT1531 is strong enough to hold all this.

Microphone

I use microphone Sennheiser MKE 400 and wind-muff is also from Sennheiser.

Unfortunately MKE 400 has a disturbance spike around 18 kHz.

End of the story

I am not planing to do any bigger art with video but it will be a good option and possibility to add video clips for up coming actions when you are photographing wild animals.

This one is not so wild...

Flatbed scanner calibration

I got tired with the results of my flatbed scanner EPSON Perfection 2400 PHOTO. I use scanner's own software EPSON Scan Ver. 2.65 A and scanning results were far out from that I was hopeing.
I did use earlier ColorChecker chart to calibrate my cameras. See my article for ACR Calibration earlier in my blog. Now I used same method to calibrate my scanner too.
My scanner is not capable to output any raw format but ACR 4.3 can open tiff or jpg files. I did scan ColorChecker chart in tiff format and used that for calibration script in Photoshop.
Script is calculating correction values for ACR calibration page.

"Open as" command will open scanned file in ACR. There I will adjust white balance, add saved calibration parameters and all other needed corrections for a photo in ACR.

If you see measured values for green channel "Green Sat= 100" that is now max. Missing saturation I can adjust for green color on ACR HSL page.

Adobe Camera Raw Calibration

I will describe with few words how I calibrated my camera bodies EOS 5D, 40D and 20D. I am using Photoshop CS3 and Lightroom for my workflow and sure all photos are taken in raw format.
Lightroom can adjust color pretty well but still I feel I need to fine tune and check color anyway.
You need ColorChecker target and a script for Photoshop CS2 or CS3. See also instructions for installing a script.

Take a photo and open it with ACR. Change workflow options 8 bits and size to the smallest size. Even with these settings script will run about one hour.
Press I key to choose Color Sampler Tool. Set white balance with gray tarket second from left on bottom row. Don't do any other adjustments. More about performing calibration.

Open image in Photoshop. Press P key to choose Pen Tool. Top of page check Paths function for Pen Tool. Click first dark skin patch then down white, right to black and up to bluish green.
Choose File...Scripts... AcrCalibrator to start running script.

Values will appear as a image in Photoshop. Flatten the image, Ctrl-Sift-E, and save it for future use.
Write correction values to ACR Camera Calibration.

Save values to Presets.

Use names like 5D_6000_-6_Evening_Sun_CZ8514. Name is meaning
EOS 5D
Color Temperature= 6000
Tint= -6
Evening sun
Lens is Zeiss 85 1.4

All elements as lighting conditions, camera body and lens have an influence on color. So if you have Cokin gradient filters it might be a good idea to correct magenta cast by calibrating your setup with gradient filter.
Canon L series lenses seems to be similar but my Zeiss lenses and specially Hartblei Super-Rotator Tilt&Sift lens needs own corrections.

Result
You need several values for all kind of lighting conditions with you gear and save corrections to ACR presets. Presets you can use in both Lightroom and ACR.

So what does calibration change in a photo and can you notice it?
Camera calibration helps you to get cleaner colors. Get several calibration values in your presets. Move cursor over preset values and you can see and compare easily the results.

I did notice that EOS 5D uses big corrections on red channel Red hue about -16 and Red saturation 40 on hard sun light. I think you can see effect quite clearly.
Camera calibration has helped me to find out how my camera bodies and lenses works related to color. I have had many times a difficulty to find out any neutral areas in a photo to measure values for color correction. You can get only shadow cast and highlight areas measured but this is not enough.

So what are you still waiting get a ColorChecker and calibrate your camera gear!

Kuula vihdoin kotona

No niin kuula saapui vihdoin perille. Postin pikakuljetus toi paketin aamulla yhdeksän aikaan kotiovelle.
Huolintaviivytykset näkyi olevan kiinni vain yhdestä henkilöstä. Onneksi sain Ension puhelimeen ja homma hoitui yhdessä päivässä. Muuten kyllä huolinnan kestäminen 2 viikkoa on jo uusi ennätys.

RRS:n kuulapää toimii aivan loistavasti. Laatu on erinomainen. Säätimet ja tuntuma kuulapään liikkeisiin suorastaan loistava. Nämä on niitä "once in a life" hankintoja ellei peräti kestä vielä isältä pojalle.
Seuraava hankinta tältä toimittajalta on luultavasti myös pykälää pienempi kuula matkamallin jalustaan.

Valokuvaustarvikkeiden huolinta ja tullaus

Aloitan blogikirjoittamiseni heti näin itselleni ajankohtaisella asialla.
Tilasin valokuvaustarvikkeisiini jenkeistä uuden kuulapään, BH-50 Pro. Valmistaja ja myyjä on yksi ja sama Really Right Stuff.

Tilaamisessa ja tavaran toimittamisessa ei ollut mitään ongelmaa. Tavara lähti samana päivänä kohti Suomea USPS Global Express Mail:nä ja oli heti tämän vuoden ensimmäisenä arkipäivänä Helsinki-Vantaan tullissa.
Soitin samana päivänä postin tai Itellan huolintaan varmistaakseni että he huolitsevat lähetyksen Vantaalla eikä lähetä sitä turhaan Jyväskylään tullattavaksi. Puhelimen toisessa päässä henkilö selittää että hän ei voi tehdä asialle mitään ennen kuin he ovat lähettäneet postilla saapumisilmoituksen. Siis tulli voi sattuman varaisesti joko laittaa sen Jyväskylään tai sitten jättää sen Vantaalle tullattavaksi. Kerran aikaisemmin he lähettivät toimituksen Jyväskylään josta sitten jouduin sen omin kuluin hakemaan Keuruulle vaikka olin tilausta tehdessä maksanut kuljetuksesta perille asti.
Sain sitten aikanaan saapumisiloituksen ja vastasin siinä kysyttyihin asioihin sähköpostilla. Varmistaakseni asian etenemisen soitin jälleen huolintaan ja kuinka olikaan sama henkilö vastasi puhelimeen. Kerroin hänelle että olin laittanut sähköpostilla saapumisilmoituksessa kysytyt tiedot ja kysyin onko asia kunnossa. Hän vain selittää että jos vastasin ilmoituksessa kysyttyihin asioihin niin asia on kunnossa vaivautumatta tarkastamaan asiaa sen kummemmin.
Lähdin seuraavalla viikolla työmatkalle Tanskaan ja siellä ollessani seurasin netin avulla lähetyksen etenemistä. Koska seurannan mukaan lähetys edelleen oli tullissa Vantaalla soittelin Keuruun postiin varmistaakseni olivatko he vastaanottaneet minulle tulevaa lähetystä. Paketti oli edelleen Vantaan tullissa ja huolintaa ei ollut tehty.
Soitan Tanskasta Itellan huolintaan ja kysyn lähetyksen tilaa. Sama henkilö vastaa taas. Eikö sillä ole kuin yksi mies töissä? Vastaus kyselyihin oli ettei he ole saanut mitään sähköpostia tai sitten sitä ei ole saatu auki. Juuri näin, lupasin lähettää sähköpostilla uudelleen tiedot kun pääsen reissusta takaisin.
Laitoin seuraavana sunnuntaina uuden mailin huolintaan.
Maanataina ei kuulu ei näy mitään edistystä.
Tiistaiaamuna saan soittamalla uuden henkilön kiinni ja selitän hänelle asian. Hän löytää kuin löytääkin mailini ja kertoo että se on kyllä tulostettu mutta ilmeisesti asialle ei ole tehty mitään.
Hän lupasi heti hoitaa asian pois alta. Hurrraaa!

Eletään ja katsellaan mitä lupaus pitää sisällään. Siis tästä asioiden hoitamisesta tai hoitamattomuudesta Itella sitten vielä veloittaa yli 20€.
Taidanpa valita sellaisen myyjän maailmalta joka lähettää tavaran UPS tai DHL kuljetuksena. He tuovat samalla veloituksella aina kotiovelle ja veloittavat huolinnasta alle 15€.

Siis miksi kiusata Itellaa näin hankalilla asioilla.
